Wimbledon, women’s qualifiers: here’s who flies in the main draw

Parks, after the success in Gaiba, qualifies. Nothing to do for the Spanish Parrizas-Diaz and for Renata Zarazua, defeated one step away from the main draw

The women’s cadet draw closes on Thursday 27 June . She confirms and surprises in the last qualifying round , starting from the overwhelming victory of Katie Volynets, seeded number 1, who only conceded the flag game to the Australian Gibson. The Chinese Bai, as well as the number 2 seed , also closes in two sets and flies undisturbed towards the main draw.

Great match for the German Lys , who overturned the result, down by one set, against Amanda Anisimova who found herself one step away from the Wimbledon main draw. Same fate even for the Mexican number 3 seed, Zarazua, who erased a one set advantage against the American Kessler . We could have expected something more from Olga Danilovic, who surrendered in just two sets against Galfi, throwing away the possibility of competing with the big seeding teams

Alycia Parks – after Gaiba’s success in WTA 125 – managed without problems against Klugman’s Wild Card, finishing with a double 6-3 . The performances of Ruse, Udvardy and Snigur were also convincing , the latter forced to make a comeback after receiving a severe 6-1 from her Turkish opponent Sonmez.

There are some who, however, did not shine at all in this last round: among these, Erika Andreeva , who was defeated by the English Wild Card Kartal with the score of 6-3 6-1.

WTA 125K: Parks takes all on the grass of the Veneto Open

In the American derby that awarded the title to Gaiba, Alycia Parks clearly wins, clearly defeats Bernarda Pera, and also wins the doubles tournament

Alycia Parks doesn’t change her ways, but she changes – at times – her face. And so, in the final of the Veneto Open promoted by Regione del Veneto, she leaves no escape for Bernarda Pera – beaten 6-3 6-1 in an hour and eight minutes of play – and wins the Confindustria Veneto Est Trophy. The 23-year-old African-American has not stopped having the same attitude on the court, from the first to the last point. An attitude that has accompanied her since the first few bars here in Gaiba and made up of a lot (a lot) of self-talk, a radio constantly turned on the same frequency. But also protests and nervousness at the first dubious calls, plus constant dialogues with her father-coach Michael on the sidelines. In the first set, the 23-year-old from Atlanta showed that she is (also) a player capable of combining her head with her shots, a quality that she had not yet shown during the week in Gaiba. And the results were there to see: because her opponent, also American (but Croatian by birth and moved to the USA at 16) was not particularly deserving. Only that, in that mode, Alycia is a player who is worth (far) the top 40 in the world. And even more. So the 6-3 in 36 minutes in favor of the African-American was practically inevitable. Too bad, however, that among the innate talents of Alycia, a WTA title already in her career (Lyon 2023), there is also that of complicating her life, in total autonomy, without the opponent on duty having to invent anything. Only in this way can we explain the empty passage – fortunately very limited in duration – which after the initial break at the start of the second set led Parks to commit a whopping 4 double faults out of 5 points and give a semblance of hope to Bernarda Pera.

More than hope, however, it was a pious illusion, also because in the end it is not so much the final score that amazes, but the counting of points. A statistic that in tennis often does not have much value, but this time perhaps tells better than any other how much the final of the Veneto Open promoted by Regione del Veneto was Parks-dependent: 61 total points won by Parks compared to the 36 scored by Pera, a balance that becomes 31 to 16 if you consider the second set alone and that is even more significant (and monstrous) if you subtract the winner’s double faults (10, 13 in the entire match). Calculator in hand: the points actually brought home by Bernarda Pera in the second set were 6. Six, in one set. And to think that, coming from the qualifiers, in the cadet draw Parks had cancelled two match points from the Czech Anna Siskova so as not to say goodbye to the company even before the party had begun. “This week gives me a lot of confidence – Alycia said in the post match – especially because now I will fly to Wimbledon (where she is in the qualifying draw by virtue of her ranking of n.149 Wta, ed.). The one in London is one of my favorite events of the year, arriving there with a victory is always very positive and can be a great help”. Nothing to add then, because Parks also repeated the doubles title won on Saturday evening in pair with her other compatriot Hailey Baptiste, in addition to taking home the prize branded Regione del Veneto as the revelation of the tournament. Confirming herself stronger than all. Just like the Veneto Open promoted by Regione del Veneto proved to be stronger than everything, even the weather conditions that marked the final day of the event. Double work for the organization and for the ‘groundsmen’, busy ‘taking care’ of the field blade by blade of grass before the final, with a team of 8 people working since 6 in the morning and with repeated coverings and uncoverings to check the state of the turf. Fortunately, the rain stopped falling on Gaiba right in the window that was necessary for Alycia Parks to secure her first career grass title. “It was an incredible third edition – commented Elia Arbustini, the director of the Veneto Open promoted by Regione del Veneto – in terms of numbers, level and public response. Throughout the week we always had an excellent turnout, also thanks to the performances of our Italian players, Sara Errani above all. We can already confirm the commitment for 2025 and we want to continue to grow, step by step, also counting on a staff that from edition to edition proves to be super”. Looking ahead, a great sun shines on the future of Gaiba.

RESULTS
Singles, final:  Parks (USA, Q) b. Pera (USA, 8) 6-3 6-1.
Doubles, final:  Baptiste / Parks (USA) b. Kolodziejova / Siskova (Cze, 2) 7-6(4) 6-2

Veneto Open, it’s immediately a spectacle

First day as a big player for the WTA 125 international tournament. Yesterday the qualifiers, today we get to the heart of it

The highly anticipated international WTA 125 tournament in Gaiba on natural grass, the only one in Italy, has officially started. The debut took place yesterday  16 June, with the qualifiers for the main draw.

Four matches were scheduled for yesterday afternoon. The American Alycia Parks against the Czech Anna Siskova, Elvina Kalieva, United States, against the Italian Anastasia Abbagnato, Ankita Raina, India, against the Swiss Susan Bandecchi and the American Varvara Lepchenko against the Italian Jennifer Ruggeri. Lepchenko enters the main draw since our standard bearer, Jennifer Ruggeri, couldn’t even start the match. Pass also for the Swiss Bandecchi, 6-4/6-0 over Raina, for the American Kalieva, 6-0/6-4 over our Abbagnato and, completing the results of yesterday’s session, the success of the American Parks in third set, 6-1/4-6/7-6, over Czech Siskova.

Today the thirty-second finals are at the starting line ; among the most interesting matches is the debut of the Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck, winner of the tournament in Gaiba in 2022, against the Swiss Celine Naef. The program also includes our Rosatello against Andreeva, seeded number seven, while the Swiss Bandecchi returns immediately to the field against the New Zealander Sun.

Lepchenko is also on the pitch today against the Belarusian Alisona Falei and one of the three defeats in the qualifiers due to the withdrawal of Lucrezia Stefanini. The Tuscan’s withdrawal frees up her place against the Czech Dominika Salkova. The draw is scheduled before the start of this afternoon’s matches. The enthusiasm grows hour by hour, from early afternoon today the big names will also be on the court, at 1.30 pm the first matches of the draw will start, Gaiba, for a week, returns to the center of Italian women’s tennis.

VENETO OPEN AT THE GREEN LIGHT: MARIA, ERRANI AND VAN UYTVANCK UNDER SPECIAL OBSERVATION

The third edition of the Veneto Open promoted by the Veneto Region finally knows the names of all its protagonists. Let’s find out everything about the main draw

At the end of a Saturday of preparations and finishing touches, marked by the training sessions of the protagonists who arrived one by one at the Gaiba Tennis Club in view of the departure on Sunday afternoon, the third edition of the Veneto Open promoted by the Veneto Region finally knows the names of all its protagonists. The tournament will be broadcast live on SuperTennis TV (64 on digital terrestrial, 212 on Sky), as well as in streaming on the Supertennis.tv website and on the SuperTenniX digital platform.

Paired along the various sections of the scoreboard are all the most anticipated ones, starting with the first seeding favorite Tatjana Maria (already a finalist on these fields last year). The German will face Romanian Irina Bara, WTA number 233, on her debut. Among the 16 first round matches of the main draw that will be spread out at the beginning of the week, the spotlight will also be on Alison Van Uytvanck, the Belgian who the seeding does not put at the top of the favorites only due to ranking issues (n.266 WTA). A ranking, the current one, “ruined” by a 2023 spent in the pits treating an annoying back injury. But the pitch says something else: first of all because she has already won here, lifting the trophy in 2022, and then because in the “direct clash” a week ago she got the better of Tatjana Maria: the ’94 class of Vilvorde was able to win the match and the title (on the Surbiton grass) in three sets, albeit very close. Her journey will start in front of the Swiss Celine Naef, number 161 WTA.

Sara Errani also deserves the magnifying glass at the starting line. Not only for her exceptional career or for her recent doubles exploit at Roland Garros (finalist with Jasmine Paolini), but also because the 37-year-old from Romagna (today n.88 in the singles rankings and n.15 in the doubles rankings) in Polesine has already come close to success. It was 2022 and on the other side of the net there was the blonde hair of Alison Van Uytvanck, a specialist who had not made any discounts and who is now in the same part of the scoreboard (the lower section). The Italian now tries again, as a wild card and as the number 4 seed, the assault on a title that had eluded her at the last corner, making her debut against the Serbian Natalija Stevanovic, number 186 in the WTA rankings. While waiting for the start of the main draw (from Monday), the Veneto Open promoted by the Veneto Region starts on Sunday at 2pm with the novelty of the qualifiers: single round, 8-man draw for the last 4 places in the main draw. There is no shortage of reasons of interest: first of all the two young Italian wild cards, Jennifer Ruggeri and Anastasia Abbagnato. The first, born in Marche in 2003, will face a very high-ranking opponent, 38 years old and with a past of world no.19 in 2012: Varvara Lepchenko, an American left-hander currently no.205 WTA but with a very high-level past and a place in the US Olympic team in the London 2012 expedition. Italy-United States challenge also for the Sicilian Abbagnato, who will face Elvina Kalieva in a clash between twenty-year-olds. To close the qualifying matches it will be the turn of the other American Alycia Parks against the Czech Anna Siskova, and the Indian Ankita Raina against the Swiss Susan Bandecchi. Now everything is ready: the fields are done to perfection, the scoreboard is done. At the Veneto Open promoted by the Veneto Region there is a green light. Green like the magical color of grass fields.

THE VENETO OPEN PROMOTED BY REGIONE DEL VENETO RAISES THE CURTAIN: IT STARTS ON SUNDAY, WITH 7 TOP-100

The presentation of the third edition of the Veneto Open promoted by the Veneto Region was presented at Palazzo Balbi in Venice

Gaiba – With less than a week to go, the Veneto Open promoted by the Veneto Region can reveal all the details of the third edition. From the new exceptional title sponsor, demonstrating the ever-increasing importance that the WTA 125 in Gaiba (province of Rovigo) has for the area, to the names of the protagonists expected from Sunday 16 June in Polesine, to fight for the title of one of only eight international tournaments on the major circuit – and the only one in Italy – on natural grass. The tournament organized by the Gaiba Tennis Club will once again have 115,000 dollars in prize money and for the first time will open up to qualifiers, with a single round (Sunday) which will offer the last four places for the main draw, which comes with the beauty of seven players among the top 100 of the WTA rankings. The highest of all is the German veteran Tatjana Maria, number 56 in the world and now a regular at the Venetian event, where she will return after having come close to the title in 2023 (she surrendered in the final to the American Ashlyn Krueger, despite a 5- 2 in the third set). Behind her, among the top 100 also the American Bernarda Pera, the Argentine Maria Lourdes Carle, the Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova, the Spanish Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and the Slovak Rebecca Sramkova. Also noteworthy is the return to Gaiba of the Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck, winner of the first edition (2022), and the presence in the entry list of many very young people with an assured future, above all the Swiss Celine Naef and the Philippine Alexandra Eala, both born in 2005 , among the very first in the world as juniors.

In the main draw there will also be the Italians Sara Errani – finalist in 2022 and competing thanks to a wild card – and Lucrezia Stefanini, best Italian in Gaiba last year (she reached the quarterfinals). Instead, the American Robin Montgomery will start from the qualifiers, who in the second edition reached the semifinals showing explosive tennis. But the possible protagonists will also be many others, in a tournament that has always reserved surprises and promises entertainment from the very first days, up to the final on Sunday 23 June. The race for tickets has already started, with coupons for the Central Court available on the Clappit online ticket office. Entrance to the club and secondary fields, however, will be free. Numerous collateral activities are also planned during the week, starting with the main draw draw ceremony starting on Monday: it will be held on Saturday 15 June at 7.30 pm, on the Centrale, and for the first time it will be open to the public. A further opportunity to fully experience a one-of-a-kind tournament. Always capable of leaving a mark.

THE STATEMENTS

Luca Zaia, president of the Veneto Region

“Thanks to the organizers, because this event is an example of the meaning of ‘throwing your heart over the obstacle’. We are talking about Gaiba, a municipality in the Polesine area of 970 inhabitants that has invented a sporting event that competes with Wimbledon. The idea of daring must be rewarded. I thank the organizers and the territory that supports this tournament, because these efforts are the nursery from which the great champions of tomorrow will be born. The regional administration has chosen to include the Veneto Open among the major events in the area, underlining the importance we attribute to sport and its values for young people and for a better quality of life in society, and because we believe in the relevance that the major sporting events are for the promotion of the territory”.

Cristiano Corazzari, councilor for territory, culture, security and sport of the Veneto Region

“The Veneto Region wanted to invest again this year in this event which for a week brings Polesine to the forefront of international sport, attracting the participation of over 15 countries and more than 50 players. New to this edition of the tournament is the establishment of the Veneto Region Award which will be awarded to the best emerging tennis player, in addition to the involvement of eight creators who in those days will tell not only what happens on the courts, but will also talk about the beauties and opportunities offered by the territory”.

Angelo Binaghi, president of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation

“The presentation of the Veneto Open falls on an unforgettable day for us, given that for the first time in history there is an Italian at number one in the world, Jannik Sinner. Certain goals are the result of planning that has been going on for twenty years now and has ensured that our sport, once an ugly duckling, could become the flagship among Italian disciplines. Gaiba’s extraordinary result, the result of competence and passion, fits into this context. Tournaments like the Veneto Open are fundamental for us, not only because they create great promotion and a notable economic impact on the territory, but also because they are the secret to the development of our technical sector. The wild cards available for the tournament, in fact, allow our best young men and women to test themselves in advance against players who are stronger than them. An opportunity that gives them the chance to progress faster. We are therefore very happy with the continuous development of the event, and there will always be a growing commitment on our part over time.”

Elia Arbustini, director of the Veneto Open promoted by the Veneto Region

“We are proud to present the third edition of the Veneto Open promoted by the Veneto Region. I must first of all thank the WTA and FITP who continue to strongly believe in this project, all the partners (Intesa Sanpaolo present here, sponsor for the second consecutive year), the institutions and bodies involved. Of these I particularly thank Confindustria Veneto Est (title of the singles trophy) and obviously the Veneto Region which promotes the event as highlighted in the name of the 2024 tournament. The event is an important opportunity for visibility for the territory, both national and international level. Our passion for tennis is expressed in a constant commitment to guarantee an exhilarating playing experience. With this in mind, we have invested to further improve the quality of our fields, to guarantee an even better performing surface capable of exalting the competing athletes. The Veneto Open promoted by the Veneto Region is part of a historic moment, from the point of view of results, for Italian tennis. And women’s tennis is growing significantly again, synonymous with quality work carried out by athletes and coaches with the fundamental support of the Federation. We trust that our tournament will also contribute to fueling the passion for tennis in Italy and in particular for women’s tennis. This year, the wild card reserved for the organization will be assigned to Sara Errani, a player who has written important pages in the history of Italian tennis and who continues to be an inspiration for the new generations. After the victory in doubles, paired with Jasmine Paolini, at the Internazionali in Rome and the recent Slam final at Roland Garros, for the third consecutive year Sara will start her grass court season at Gaiba. It will be a truly special edition, full of emotions and great challenges, and we, as always, can’t wait to get started.”

Paolo Armenio, vice president of Confindustria Veneto Est with responsibility for the Rovigo Territory

“Every time I think about when, three years ago, the guys from Gaiba came to present us this project, I realize how what seemed like a miracle has turned into reality. Three moments come to mind: when together with councilor Corazzari we decided to launch ourselves into this great adventure; when in the meeting we had last November with FITP president Binaghi we reiterated our confidence towards this tournament; and when, every time I happened to meet President Zaia, I asked for his support. So here we are, with a project that can only continue to grow. A development project for a territory that has nothing to envy of many others. When all the institutions decide to work together, without forgetting Intesa Sanpaolo which immediately embraced this possibility, great results can be achieved not only nationally but also internationally”.

Cristina Balbo, regional director of Veneto Ovest and Trentino Alto Adige Intesa Sanpaolo

“For the second consecutive year we have renewed our support for this sporting event which will bring the small town of Gaiba into the international spotlight, thanks to the presence of world-class athletes. The Veneto Open confirms itself as a splendid opportunity to promote sport and its values of inclusion and solidarity, but also an opportunity to enhance and understand the Polesine and an economic boost for the local municipalities”.

Nicola Zanca, mayor of Gaiba

“Today we feel like we are dreaming: it is a historic date for Italian tennis and it is also historic for the Municipality of Gaiba, given that we are reconfirmed as administration. Like every year we propose the dream of bringing a municipality of less than 1,000 inhabitants to the major circuit, in the tennis that counts. In the same week there will be three WTA tournaments: one in Berlin, another in Birmingham and the third in Gaiba, where the players will stop on their way from Roland Garros to Wimbledon, from Paris to London. An achievement born of a dream, of great team work and of a lot of collaboration between the institutions, which I thank from the bottom of my heart. Without their support, this dream would probably have remained on the back burner, but we are ready to see it come true for the third time.”

Enrico Ferrarese, president of the Province of Rovigo

“We have to thank Gaiba, and the group of guys who imagined and then gave life to something that seemed impossible. As well as all the sponsors and institutions. As the Province of Rovigo we feel great pride in an experience that we are all trying to live together, each one doing their best to succeed together with Gaiba in preparing a context suitable for a tournament of this level. We are happy and grateful that the Veneto Region is a protagonist in this adventure, and thus contributes to increasing the value of the event. At the same time, we as Polesine and the province of Rovigo, understood as a territory and community, hope to be able to make our contribution to the entire Veneto sports movement”.

This year the company from Rovigo will be one of the sponsors of the only WTA tennis tournament on natural grass in Italy in the municipality of Gaiba (Rovigo)

SALARA (Rovigo) – The world of international women’s tennis reunites in Gaiba, in the province of Rovigo, for the third edition of Veneto Open, the prestigious WTA 125 women’s grass tennis tournament, with a prize pool of 115,000 dollars. The event, which will be held from 16 to 23 June, is among the eight most important women’s grass tournaments in the world, and this year will also see among its sponsors Mulino Padano , a historic reality in the Italian milling industry, which has its own headquarters in the nearby municipality of Salara.

Throughout the event Mulino Padano will liven up the Expo Area, located next to the central court, with an exclusive novelty: Padano’s Pizza Truck (link). It is a very original truck that will churn out delicious pizzas prepared by exceptional guests who will take turns during the evenings. Tennis lovers will have the opportunity to taste them during the tournament days, enjoying a real culinary experience in the name of Italian excellence.

“Mulino Padano has always promoted the productive and gastronomic culture of our territory – comments Valerio Cavallari , company administrator – With the same commitment, we have decided to support the Veneto Open tournament, one of the most beautiful success stories in the world of tennis . Events like this promote social growth through sports practice, not only to improve health, but also as moments of social inclusion and development of the territory that hosts them, generating a positive impact on the entire community. Through a dish that is a symbol of Italianness such as pizza, we wish to contribute to these initiatives, which, like food, offer well-being and healthy moments of aggregation”.

Luca Zaia, dribbling show at the presentation of the Veneto Open tennis: «I’m not Sinner but I get by»

The tournament of the international women’s circuit will see 7 of the world’s top 100 tennis players in the WTA rankings compete on its courts

A long series of dribbles with the tennis racket . Thus the president of Veneto, Luca Zaia , wanted to close the press conference presenting the third edition of the  Veneto Open in style ,  drawing applause from those present. “Well, I may not be Sinner, but I can manage…(laughing emoticon ed.)”, the phrase chosen by the governor to accompany the video published among the stories of his Facebook and Instagram channels.

The tournament

The Veneto Open will take place from 16 to 23 June, one of only eight international tournaments on the major women’s circuit – the only one in Italy – on natural grass, which will see 7 of the top 100 tennis players in the world in the WTA rankings compete on its courts .

The game is being played in Gaiba, in the province of Rovigo, «a municipality of just 970 inhabitants which has invented a sporting event that competes with Wimbledon and is reconfirmed, for the third edition, as the protagonist of international tennis – commented Zaia himself on Facebook – I thank the organizers and the territory that supports this tournament, because these efforts are the nursery from which the great champions of tomorrow will be born.”

Veneto Open warms up the engines

Now in its third edition, the tournament confirms its place among the eight on the international circuit

It’s official, from Sunday 16th to Sunday 23rd June the WTA 125 returns to Gaiba . Now in its third edition, the tournament is confirmed as one of the eight on the international circuit, the only one in Italy, on natural grass and can now be considered one of the most important events in the sporting panorama of our region.

The organizers of the Veneto Open in Gaiba have accustomed the public, the enthusiasts and every single citizen of the small town of Polesine, just over a thousand inhabitants, to pursuing objectives that on paper are very difficult to achieve. But this year too they succeeded and as in a dream from which no one wants to be taken away, some of the best tennis players in the world will be in Gaiba between Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Just comparing these two tournaments to Gaiba is thrilling but in these parts, evidently, impossible challenges can materialize. The tournament is organized by the Gaiba Tennis Club, has a prize pool of 115 thousand dollars, is included by the Veneto Region among the “Major Events” of the area and, this year too, there will be no shortage of interesting news .

For example, the Veneto Region itself has established the Veneto Region Award which will be awarded to the best emerging tennis player and then, going into the merits of the technical innovations, the qualifying board, open to 8 players, will compete on the opening day to gain access to the last 4 available places in the main draw which will see 32 tennis players at the start. The confirmations, compared to the last edition, are the doubles draw with 8 couples competing and the collaboration with the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation and, obviously, that with the Women’s Tennis Association. This year the tournament will enjoy significant media coverage, the matches will be broadcast live on the SuperTennis TV channel and on the SuperTenniX digital platform.

Tickets, already on sale on the Clappit platform, will allow access to the central court, while entry to the Tennis Club will be free for the secondary courts. Everything is therefore ready for the third edition of the Veneto Open, all that is missing is the list of participating tennis players. Among these is the name that will enter its name on the tournament’s roll of honor after the Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck, winner in 2022, and the American Ashlyn Krueger, in first place in 2023.
